Diamond Cut: The Most Important of the 4Cs
Cut is the most important of the 4Cs and controls a diamond's sparkle. Learn the cut grade scale, what to buy, and how cut affects price in India.
If you learn only one thing about diamonds, learn this: cut matters more than colour, clarity or carat. Cut is what makes a diamond sparkle. A large, colourless, flawless diamond with a poor cut looks dull, while a well-cut diamond comes alive with light. It is the one C you should never compromise.
What cut actually means
Cut is not the diamond's shape (round, oval and so on). It measures how well the facets are proportioned and finished to return light to your eye. Three qualities create the sparkle:
- Brilliance: the white light reflected back from inside the stone.
- Fire: the flashes of rainbow colour.
- Scintillation: the sparkle and pattern of light as the diamond moves.
Cut is graded on proportions (table and depth percentage, crown angle), symmetry (facet alignment) and polish (surface finish).

The cut grade scale
| Grade | What you see | Varniya verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Ideal / Excellent | Maximum brilliance, even, crisp light pattern | The Varniya standard |
| Very Good | Strong sparkle, slight light loss | Good, but below our bar |
| Good | Noticeably duller | We don't stock |
| Fair / Poor | Dark and lifeless | Never |
IGI, which grades most lab-grown diamonds, calls its top grade Ideal; GIA calls it Excellent. They mean the same thing.
The Varniya standard
95% of Varniya's diamonds are Ideal Cut, and the rest are top-tier Excellent. Beyond the certificate, every stone is handpicked using our own proprietary light-performance checks, because brilliance should be seen, not just certified.
